Are Turf Pests Killing Your Lawn?

There are many common turf diseases that affect lawns in Ontario. Generally, they all stem from the same problem, improper horticultural practices.

If you follow the first 5 proper horticultural practices combined with the liquid fertilizer and soil conditioners applied by the Lawn Renovators then you will have a healthy turf. Diseases and pests affect lawns with weak immune systems, and do minimal damage to healthy lawns.

Adequate thatch levels and strong healthy grass keep away the pests.
Excess or insufficient water are the cause of almost all turf diseases. Water issues arise from compacted soil, excess thatch, mowing practices and improper watering due to timing or amount. If you follow the steps above then your lawn will have the best chance against any lawn pests.

White Grub

White GrubsWhite grubs are the larvae of European Chafer Beetles (June Beetles). If you see your trees on the main property or the boulevard buzzing with these unsightly flying beetles that, be prepared for a grub infestation with a fall nematodes treatment. The white grubs feed on turf roots causing the area where they’re feeding to brown, wilt, and (if left long enough) die. The root systems are damaged to the point where the lawn can be rolled back like a carpet. When the roots are severed the grass cannot absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Another sign of trouble ahead in your lawn is digging from animals such as skunks, raccoons, moles, voles and birds which like to tear up the lawns looking for grubs.

Grub damage can go from minimal to severe in a very short period of time if left un-treated.

The Lawn Renovators apply nematodes to minimize grub populations and help to eliminate potential damage they may cause. Nematodes are applied in early fall as that is when white grubs are most actively feeding which will help to provide maximum results.

Below is a chart of grub feeding cycles. In late July, and August is the best time to apply nematodes as they can infiltrate the grub while it’s small and feeding. The grubs cannot be affected by nematodes in their larval stage as they are not ingesting any type of food rendering the nematode treatment ineffective.

European Cranefly / Leatherjacket

Leatherjackets are very common in central Ontario. In their larval stage as leatherjackets they feed on the roots of grass causing the turf to brown and die.

Their symptoms and effects are the same as white grubs however in most cases they are not as damaging as white grubs can be. The crane fly can be easily identified by their over sized legs and wings. In this stage they are not damaging to lawns, however if you are walking through your lawn and the crane fly’s seem to be popping up at you from everywhere, then your lawn is likely infested with leatherjacket larvae.

Leatherjacket nematodes treatments are preformed in the fall as the leatherjacket larvae in are in the stage where they are most susceptible to nematode infection.

Sod Webworm

Sod WebwormSod Webworms are very common in Ontario lawns. During their larval stage they are a form of grub, and as adults they are a type of moth. Below are pictures of them in their larval and adult stages:

Sod Webworms chew on the blades and shoots of grass causing turf to brown in irregular patches. They feed during the summer months when the turf is dry and easier to chew through. They leave a small web that you can see along the top of the blades of grass, easily visible in the early morning dew. Another indicator of sod webworm presence can be seen if you walk along the lawn and see little tiny moths flying around at a low altitude where you’re walking.

Damage happens mostly around June and July. Sod webworms prefer dry grass, so a well watered lawn is the best defence against these pesky critters. However, sod webworm damage is not permanent and can be repaired with a soil conditioner treatment, and regular fertilization.
Preventative measures include proper watering practices, and the promotion and upkeep of a thick turf.

Chinch bugs are the most common turf pest found in central Ontario however they rarely reach numbers high enough to do much significant damage. Chinch bugs have many stages of growth and take on a variety of colors and markings through their several metamorphosis stages seen below.

As full grown adults they only reach 1/5 of an inch and won’t be noticed unless they’re looked for. Regardless of their size they still damage dry lawns in the summer if given the opportunity.

The chinch bug sucks out the plant juices while injecting chemicals into the plant which clog the vascular system. The area around the feeding puncture usually turns yellow. Damaged areas first appear as small, irregular patches which enlarge as the insects spread.

Chinch bugs are most damaging in open, sunny, dry areas. The most crucial preventative step in avoiding chinch bug damage is regular watering in the early morning during the dry summer months, and if the grass is damaged it can be aided in its recovery with an application of kelp. If your lawn is drying out under the scorching summer sun, you can be sure that there are chinch bugs around.
